Its name derives from a pre-Latin term meaning rocky peak of a sharp and rugged shape, and from the name of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the village, a follower of St. Francis. On the basis of some archaeological finds, its origin dates back to Roman times; the place was fortified in the Middle Ages.On the top of the hill stands a scenic park of considerable interest, where you will also find the remains of a tower of the original Rocca.Not to be missed: the elegant Municipal Theatre, the only one in the province of Macerata built entirely of wood and painted by Antonio Liozzi (c. 1780), can be considered a Baroque masterpiece, perhaps the most important in the Marche region in the 18th century.
